    Dear Missouri Students and Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy and safe summer. I hope you have lots of fun, but let’s not let important skills slip away.

Research shows that students can lose 2.6 months’ worth of math skills over the summer. Beginning June 17, students will have the opportunity to keep their math skills sharp by participating in the Missouri Summer Math Challenge. They can earn badges for mastering math concepts and earn a certificate to celebrate their accomplishments when the challenge ends on July 26. I hope that students and parents across our state will work together on the challenge. Parents, you can register your child by going to quantiles.com/summer-math and following the instructions.

The Missouri Summer Math Challenge can help prevent summer math slump. Help us make sure students begin school in the fall ready to take on the next level of math. Thank you for supporting public education in Missouri and for your commitment to helping make sure that every student in our state has a chance to succeed in school and in life.

The Union R-XI School District will again this summer be offering all K-8 students, free of charge, an exciting approach to learning called Summer Journey. Make no mistake about it; our summer program will be FUN for kids. Yet, our summer school program also provides an opportunity for students to experience over 60 hours of advanced academic preparation for the year ahead as well as to review and apply previously learned skills and knowledge. Summer Journey’s extraordinary educational goals are comprised of academic courses with hands-on instruction centered in reading, language arts, math, and social studies or science. Other important fields of study are also available.

Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Model Policy Publication

Pursuant to Section 170.048, RSMo, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) developed a model policy regarding youth suicide awareness and prevention. This model policy may be adopted by Missouri school districts to meet the requirements of Section 170.048, RSMo which provides as follows:

    1. By July 1, 2018, each district shall adopt a policy for youth suicide awareness and prevention, including plans for how the district will provide for the training and education of its district employees. (1)The Union R-XI School District adopted Policy JHDF for youth suicide awareness and prevention.
    2. Each district's policy shall address, but not be limited to, the following:
      (1) Strategies that can help identify students who are at possible risk of suicide; (2) Strategies and protocols for helping students at possible risk of suicide; and (3) Protocols for responding to a suicide death.

This model policy is intended to serve as a template for our district in developing suicide prevention policy. We are currently meeting as a team to adapt and customize the model policy to best address and meet the needs of our school community.
